Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a small, portable device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm for any abnormalities and, if necessary, directs the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to the heart of someone suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. This shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

UGA AED Program Guidelines

The use of AED’s will be in compliance with the responsibilities and procedures outlined in this program and consistent with guidelines outlined by the State of Georgia.

AED Training Module

New AED coordinators should utilize the AED Training Module to better understand their roles and responsibilities associated with the AED program. The AED Training Module provides detailed information on roles/responsibilities, maintenance issues, ordering replacement parts, post-incident reporting and helpful hints.

Purchasing an AED

BEFORE ORDERING AN AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED), DEPARTMENTS NEED TO CONTACT the Office of Emergency Preparedness for instructions.

After contacting OEP, OEP will create and assign a UGAmart cart to the department. OEP will work with each department on determining the appropriate brand of AED and placement.

AED Replacement Pads, Battery, or Medical Direction (LifeREADY):

The Office of Emergency Preparedness will order replacement pads and batteries for the AEDs. The medical direction will be charged to individual departments every year. This fee is $100 per 911 address. Please email the Office of Emergency Preparedness with any questions.
